BACKGROUND Farmworkers are at high-risk for tick bites, which potentially transmit various tick-borne diseases. Previous studies show that personal prevention against tick bites is key, and certain factors namely, knowledge, experience of tick bites, and health beliefs influence compliance with tick bites preventive behaviour. This study aimed to assess these factors and their associations with...

BACKGROUND Understanding and quantification of the risk of Lyme borreliosis after a tick bite can aid development of prevention strategies against Lyme borreliosis. METHODS We used 3,525 single tick bite reports from three large prospective studies on the transmission risk of tick-borne pathogens to humans, with 50 reports of Lyme borreliosis during the follow-up period, among 1,973 reports w...

Tick-borne infectious diseases and allergies are a growing problem worldwide. Tick bite allergy has been associated with the direct effect of immunoglobulin E (IgE) response to tick salivary antigens, or secondary to the induction of allergy to red meat consumption through IgE antibodies against the carbohydrate α-Gal (Gal α 1-3Gal β 1-(3)4GlcNAc-R). However, despite the growing burden of this ...

As an alternative to oral prophylaxis for the prevention of tick transmission of Borrelia burgdorferi, we tested antibiotic cream prophylactic formulations in a murine model of spirochete infection. A 4% preparation of doxycycline cream afforded no protection, but a single application of 4% azithromycin cream was 100% protective when applied directly to the tick bite site at the time of tick re...

Tick bite anaphylaxis has rarely been reported. It may follow the bite of any of the different tick life cycle forms, is related to the release of salivary juices, and may range from mild itch to severe wheeze or shock. Data obtained suggest that it is more common and potentially life threatening than tick paralysis, which is more widely reported. Emergency physicians should recognise this poss...

BACKGROUND Current laboratory markers do not readily detect acute Lyme disease. We assessed the utility of complement and its split products as markers of Lyme disease in patients shortly after a tick bite. METHODS Thirty-one consecutive acute Lyme disease patients, 14 with and 17 without erythema migrans (EM) skin rash, seen by a physician within 96 h of a tick bite were matched with 24 cons...

A 44-year-old female was admitted because of tender, enlarged inguinal lymph nodes with a history of tick bite five weeks earlier. In the place of a tick bite on the skin a small ulcer was present. The primary symptoms before admission suggested typical diseases related to tick bite such as Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis, what corresponded with positive IgM ELISA test for Lyme bor...

This manuscript describes the typical presentation of erythema migrans caused by tick bite. The purposes of this article are (i) to encourage physicians to observe patients with tick bite carefully since it may cause fatal encephalitis, and (ii) to facilitate physicians, especially in endemic areas, to consider tick-borne encephalitis virus as one of the causes of encephalitis.
