Zinc is an essential element in people’s diet. Too little zinc can cause health problems, but too much zinc is harmful. The U.S. Recommended Dietary Allowance (U.S. RDA) for zinc is 5 15 milligrams a day for humans. Not enough zinc in one’s diet can result in a loss of appetite, a decreased sense of taste and smell, slow wound healing and skin sores, or a damaged immune system. Young men who do...

Zinc has been discussed as a feed additive to improve hoof horn quality and skin diseases. Hooves of good quality contain more zinc than hooves of poor quality (1). Because zinc supplementation seems to increase the zinc content of the hoof (1), the bioavailability of different zinc compounds became potentially important. In the present investigation the serum response after oral supplementatio...

As an essential element, selenium is present in enzymes from several families, including glutathione peroxidases, and is thought to exert anticarcinogenic properties. A remarkable feature of selenium consists of its ability to oxidize thiols under reducing conditions. Thus, one mode of action recently suggested is the oxidation of thiol groups of metallothionein, thereby providing zinc for esse...

polyethylene glycol was easily grafted to silica gel and used as a solid–liquid phase transfer catalyst in the reduction of aromatic nitro compounds. this silica-grafted polyethylene glycol is proved to be an efficient heterogeneous catalyst in the reduction of nitroarenes to the corresponding aromatic amines with zinc powder in water. the reduction reactions proceeded efficiently with excellen...

zinc ferrite (znfe2o4) nanoparticles were synthesized via the auto-combustion assisted sol-gel method of zn2+ and fe3+ ions (molar ratio 1:2) in ammonia solution. the prepared nanomagnetic catalyst was characterized by ir, xrd, sem and icp. the diameter of the znfe2o4 mnps (63.7 nm) was determined by debye-scherre equation via their xrd pattern. nanomagnetic znfe2o4 efficiently catalyzes oxidat...

The HIV-1 nucleocapsid protein (NCp7) is a small basic protein with two CysCysHisCys zinc-binding domains that specifically recognizes the Psi-site of the viral RNA. NCp7 plays a number of crucial roles in the viral lifecycle, including reverse transcription and RNA encapsidation. Several classes of potential anti-HIV compounds have been designed to inactivate NCp7 through zinc ejection, includ...

the difficult to handle and store zinc borohydride, zn(bh4)2, is stabilized by supporting it on polyvinylpyridine. this new mild, efficient, selective, and regenerable polymer supported borohydride reducing agent reduces a variety organic compounds such as, aldehydes, a-b-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, acid chlorides, epoxides, disulfides, as well as reductive acetylation of carbonyl compounds...

We report first-principles calculations of zinc-blende half-metals, identifying systems for epitaxial growth with semiconductors, and present calculations for CrAs/GaAs multilayers. We find that half-metallicity is conserved troughout the heterostructure, making this a good candidate for spintronics applications.

Selenium has been increasingly recognized as an essential element in biology and medicine. Its biochemistry resembles that of sulfur, yet differs from it by virtue of both redox potentials and stabilities of its oxidation states. Selenium can substitute for the more ubiquitous sulfur of cysteine and as such plays an important role in more than a dozen selenoproteins. We have chosen to examine z...

We have discovered two metal ion binding compounds, pyrithione (PT) and hinokitiol (HK), that efficiently inhibit human rhinovirus, coxsackievirus, and mengovirus multiplication. Early stages of virus infection are unaffected by these compounds. However, the cleavage of the cellular eukaryotic translation initiation factor eIF4GI by the rhinoviral 2A protease was abolished in the presence of PT...
