this research study aimed to investigate the relationship between field-dependence/independence cognitive style and vocabulary learning strategies among iranian efl learners. ninety participants majoring in english translation at arak university were chosen. the participants were classified into two groups of field-dependent and independent based on the results of group embedded figure test (geft). then, a vocabulary learning strategies questionnaire (schmitt, 2000) was administered. the data was analyzed through pearson product-moment and spearman correlation procedures. structural equation modeling (sem) was used to see the latent correlations between variables and also to investigate which cognitive style (fd or fi) as an independent variable can be the predictor of the kind of vocabulary learning strategies used by iranian efl learners. the results showed that there was a positive correlation between field-dependent/independent cognitive style and vocabulary learning strategies. it also revealed that field-dependent participants tended to use social strategies more than field-independent individuals while field-independent participants used cognitive and metacognitive strategies more frequently than field-dependent counterparts.
