Effect of multisensory stimulation on oxygen saturation in premature infants during eye examination

چکیده مقاله:
Background: Eye examination for screening of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), as a painful procedure, causes physiological changes in premature infants. Multisensory stimulation is a non-pharmacological analgesic method which affects physiological measures during painful procedures. Aim: To determine the effect of multisensory stimulation on oxygen saturation in premature infants during eye examinations Methods: In this single-blind randomized clinical trial, 80 premature infants in Khatamolanbya hospital of Mashhad in 2014 were randomly divided into two groups of “control” and “multisensory stimulation”. In the intervention group, multisensory stimulation was administered 15 minutes before the start of the examination and the control group received standard care. Arterial oxygen saturation of each infant was recorded at 30-second intervals before, during, and after eye examination in a researcher-built checklist and a physiological characteristics form. Data were analyzed by independent t-test, Mann-Whitney, and repeated measures ANOVA using SPSS version 11.5. Results: The mean gestational age of multisensory stimulation group was 30.4±7.1 and the control group was 30.6 ± 8.1 weeks. Based on the analysis of variance with repeated measures, arterial blood oxygen saturation was significantly different in both groups during the evaluation (p

Effect of Multisensory Stimulation on Pain of Eye Examination in Preterm Infants
BACKGROUND Eye examination as one of the painful procedures for retinopathy of prematurity screening can cause some pain-related physiological and behavioral changes in preterm infants. Multisensory stimulation is an analgesic non-pharmacological method that has analgesic effects on infants during painful procedures. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to determine the effect of multisensory stimulat...
متن کاملThe effect of breast milk odor on concentration percentage of oxygen saturation and respiratory rate in premature infants
Background: establishing a regular respiratory condition in the infants is one of the basic considerations in NICU. Newborns show noticeable breath alterations in response to even low concentrations of some fragrance. Aim: determining the effect of breast milk odor on oxygen saturation and respiratory rate in premature infants. Methods: In this four-group randomized clinical trial, 180 prematu...
متن کاملOptimal oxygen saturation in premature infants
There is a delicate balance between too little and too much supplemental oxygen exposure in premature infants. Since underuse and overuse of supplemental oxygen can harm premature infants, oxygen saturation levels must be monitored and kept at less than 95% to prevent reactive oxygen species-related diseases, such as retinopathy of prematurity and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. At the same time, d...
متن کاملMaintaining optimal oxygen saturation in premature infants.
INTRODUCTION Advances in technology have resulted in increasing survival rates for premature infants. Oxygen therapy is commonly used in neonatal units as part of respiratory support. The number of premature infants in our institution surviving with severe (stage ≥3) retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) prompted a review of oxygen therapy as a contributing factor. Prolonged exposure to high concent...
متن کاملEffect of vocal stimulation on responses of premature infants
Background and Objectives: There are studies that support music and singing as appropriate developmental care for premature infants, thus, we conducted this study to investigate the physiological and behavioral responses of premature infants to Quran recitation, lullaby music and silence. Methods: In a randomized controlled trial (2011-2012),120 premature infants in the Neonatal Unit (NNU) at I...
