چکیده مقاله:

This presentation analyses the histological types, relative incidences, age, sex and anatomical distributions of one hundred and seventy-nine biopsy proven tumors of the spinal canal from a general hospital in Iran. Particular attention is paid to differences in the relative incidence of these tumors compared with that in various published reports and the statistics from several eastern countries are compared with those from the West. In the patients studied, secondary tumors were the most frequent causes of spinal cord and cauda equina compression (39.6%), followed by nerve sheath cell tumors (24.5%), meningiomas (20%) and neuroepithelial tumors (10%). Among the secondary tumors, the most common metastatic tumor was the lymphoma and the most common vertebral column neoplasm was the myeloma, each accounting for 8.9% of the entire series, an unusually high proportion for the myeloma.

Cauda equina and spinal cord compression in Paget's disease.

Paget’s disease of the spine seldom causes symptoms. Backache is uncommon, and the complication ofcauda equina or spinal cord compression, as in the three cases to be described, is rare. Indeed it has been recorded in only forty-eight patients in the literature up to 1964. Sir James Paget first described the condition ofosteitis deformans in 1877. In the advanced stages ofthe disease he noted t...

Spinal stenosis, a cause of cauda equina compression.

In 1934 Mixter and Barr described the syndrome of the ruptured intervertebral disc in the lumbar region. Since then the herniated intervertebral disc has been considered to be the dominant cause of low back pain and sciatica. In 1953 Schlesinger and Taveras pointed out that in the presence of a narrow spinal canal patients with herniated intervertebral discs may present an atypical picture of m...

Incidence of Primary Spinal Cord, Spinal Meninges, and Cauda Equina Tumors in Korea, 2006-2010

PURPOSE Primary spinal cord and appendage tumors (PSCAT) originating from the spinal cord, spinal meninges, and cauda equina are uncommon. Worldwide, population-based cancer registry data are mostly based on malignant tumors only, which means few data are available on PSCATs, including non-malignant tumors. Therefore, the objective of this study was to provide information regarding the incidenc...

Functional outcome after experimental cauda equina compression.

Spinal nerve roots often sustain compression injuries. We used a Wistar rat model of the cauda equina syndrome to investigate such injuries. Rapid transient compression of the cauda equina was produced using a balloon catheter. The results were assessed by daily neurological examination and somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) recording before surgery and ten weeks after decompression. Compress...

Cauda equina syndrome and nitric oxide synthase immunoreactivity in the spinal cord of the dog.

The development of the cauda equina syndrome in the dog and the involvement of spinal nitric oxide synthase immunoreactivity (NOS-IR) and catalytic nitric oxide synthase (cNOS) activity were studied in a pain model caused by multiple cauda equina constrictions. Increased NOS-IR was found two days post-constriction in neurons of the deep dorsal horn and in large, mostly bipolar neurons located i...
