We report on stable dual-wavelength operation in passive and hybrid mode-locking of a 10GHz two-section InAs/InP(100) quantum dot laser diode operating at 1.5μm. The range of stable passive mode-locking, the locking range of hybrid mode-locking and detailed measurements of the phase modulation in the output pulses will be presented. Keywordsmode-locked laser diode; quantum dot; hybrid mode-lock...

The mode-locking technique based on intracavity second-harmonic generation is extended to sum- and difference-frequency generation. Simultaneous passive mode locking of two different types of laser in a combined cavity is thus possible. By using the same principle, a laser may be actively mode locked by injection of a pulse train from another mode-locked laser.

Spurious sidebands observed in the noise spectrum of colliding-pulse mode-locking dye lasers result from coupling of the longitudinal mode beating modulations of the (argon-ion) pump laser with the dye laser. We achieve a 50-dB amplitude noise reduction at the mixing frequencies by inserting a single-frequency étalon in the argon-laser cavity. Furthermore, we find the amplitude noise of the col...

We demonstrate a Kerr-lens mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser with an additional Yb(3+) doped Potassium Yttrium Tungstate crystal (Yb:KYW) in the laser cavity, where not only the pump threshold to start mode-locking but also the stable regions to maintain mode-locking can be well-controlled by varying the position of Yb:KYW nearby the confocal focus to change the intracavity Kerr-effects. The pump t...

We demonstrate self-starting passive mode locking of a Cr (4+):YAG laser, using an intracavity nonlinear mirror as a saturable absorber. The pump source is a diode-pumped Nd:YVO(4) laser. Output pulses are centered at 1541 nm, with 26-nm spectral bandwidth and 110-fs pulse width. Output powers of 70 mW are obtained with 8 W of pump power. This mode locking technique is compared with Kerr-lens m...

Mode-locking technique is a widely used method for generating ultrashort laser pulses. The mode-locked laser output is a sequence of equally spaced laser pulses. The pulse width is limited by the spectral range of the gain medium and inversely related to the bandwidth of the laser emission. Compared with the active mode-locking technique, passively modelocked laser with saturable absorber is ab...

Compact femtosecond laser operation of Yb:Gd(2)SiO(5) (Yb:GSO) crystal was demonstrated under high-brightness diode-end-pumping. A semiconductor saturable absorption mirror was used to start passive mode-locking. Stable mode-locking could be realized near the emission bands around 1031, 1048, and 1088 nm, respectively. The mode-locked Yb:GSO laser could be tuned from one stable mode-locking ban...

A Cr:LiSrAIF(6) laser has been mode locked by using a multiple-quantum-well (MQW) absorber. With the MQW absorber inside the laser cavity, Kerr lens mode locking is initiated, yielding transform-limited pulses as short as 93 fs. Pulses of 500-fs duration have also been produced by using resonant passive mode locking with the MQW absorber in an external cavity.
