Abstract:

Falling film evaporators, due to their high heat transfer coefficients, low energy loss, rather a low holdup time, and the ability to handle high capacities have broad applications in food industries. Thus, this kind of evaporator is being used in the production of temperature sensitive compounds such as syrups. In this study, through modelling of the falling film evaporator with the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) we have tried to investigate the effect of adding flow turbulator (baffles) on the inner side of the tubes and assess the key parameters for increasing the efficiency of the evaporator. The simulation was conducted using ANSYS FUENT (v 0.16.0). Results indicate that placing baffles would have a significant effect on increasing evaporator efficiency. The results of the parametric study showed that by installing baffles, the amount of juice evaporation rate can be increased, however, both the evaporator length and volume fraction can be reduced. The results showed that the heat transfer coefficient has increased from 10000 W/m2 °C in the case of the typical evaporator to 25000 W/m2 °C in the case of a baffled tube wall.

Some Data on Heat Transfer in Multiple Effect Evaporators

Heat transfer data from measurements covering 15 Roberts evaporator vessels at 3 mills (82 data sets total) is presented. Heat transfer coefficient (HTC) is plotted against brix, temperature, temperature difference ( At) and viscosity respectively. It is shown that the influnce of At on HTC cannot be deduced from this type of data. The pronounced difference in operating conditions between last ...

Analysis of heat and mass transfer between air and falling film in a cross flow configuration

Heat and mass transfer between air and falling solution film in a cross flow configuration is investigated. Effects of addition of Cu-ultrafine particles in enhancing heat and mass transfer process are also examined. A parametric study is employed to investigate the effects of pertinent controlling parameters on dehumidification and cooling processes and their subsequent optimization. It is fou...

Heat Transfer Coefficient Correlations for Robert Juice Evaporators

CORRELATIONS FOR heat transfer performance in sugar factory juice evaporators are important for benchmarking and prediction of evaporator set performance. The correlation recently proposed by Broadfoot and Dunn (2007) (B&D) is examined and comparisons are made between it and formulae currently being used, in particular with the ‘Australian typical’ correlation, using data from Australian and ov...

Flow Boiling Heat Transfer in Microchannel Cold Plate Evaporators for Electronics Cooling

The local two-phase heat transfer coefficient is a critical parameter in the design of microchannel cold plate evaporators used in applications such as electronics cooling systems. Only a few past studies on microchannels have investigated the heat transfer characteristics over the entire vapor quality range and conflicting trends have been reported even in these studies. Therefore, the present...

A Model for Correlating Flow Boiling Heat Transfer in Augmented Tubes and Compact Evaporators

The additive model for the convective and nucleate boiling components originally suggested by Bergles and Rohsenow (1964) for subcooled and low-quality regions was employed in the Kandlikar correlation (1990a) for flow boiling in smooth tubes. It is now extended to augmented tubes and compact evaporators. Two separate factors are introduced in the convective boiling and the nucleate boiling ter...
