چکیده مقاله:

In modern engines with higher compression ratios, severe pressures and non-uniform heating up is occurred for the engine parts. The piston as the most critical part among all automotive components has been the subject of numerous studies on calculation of temperature distribution, but thermal stress analyses are limited. In this study, the piston of gasoline engine XU7 which is widespread in Iran transport section is considered for thermo-mechanical investigation. A 3D linear static stress analysis is constructed in COSMOS Works to determine the stress distribution during the combustion stroke. The maximum normal stress takes place at the middle surface of the piston crown. The von Mises stress is found to be critical on upper parts of the pin-hole area. Effect of ceramic coating layer on stress distributions are evaluated and compared with results obtained for a traditional uncoated piston. According to the results, the maximum stress can be readily controlled by increasing the thickness of ceramic layer.

Shape memory alloy nanostructures with coupled dynamic thermo-mechanical effects

Employing the Ginzburg-Landau phase-field theory, a new coupled dynamic thermo-mechanical 3D model has been proposed for modeling the cubic-to-tetragonal martensitic transformations in shape memory alloy (SMA) nanostructures. The stress-induced phase transformations and thermo-mechanical behavior of nanostructured SMAs have been investigated. The mechanical and thermal hysteresis phenomena, loc...

Evaluation of continuum damage at different temperatures for aluminum-silicon alloy of engine piston within low-cycle fatigue regime

In this article, the isothermal low-cycle fatigue continuum damage in the engine piston aluminum alloy has been evaluated at different temperatures. For this objective, experimental data of low-cycle fatigue tests on standard specimens were used at 280, 350 and 425°C. Based on the continuum damage mechanics method, the fatigue damage was calculated during cyclic loading. Obtained results, inclu...

Failure analysis of an intake valve in a gasoline engine

This paper presents a failure analysis on a failed intake valve in a gasoline engine. During an endurance test, an intake valve was broken and caused some damages on the piston. Material examinations (by a light microscope and also a scanning electron microscope) were conducted on the fracture surface of the intake valve shaft. Results showed that no pores or defects could be observed and the m...

Evaluating the Effects of Ceramic Layer and Thermal Dam on Optimizing the Temperature Gradient of a Gasoline Engine Piston (TECHNICAL NOTE)

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effect of different methods for improving the temperature gradient of a specified gasoline engine piston. With a robust FE based software, 3D thermal analyses have been carried out for the piston model. Unlike previous studies, the effects of both fully and locally ceramic layers on the crown top surface were considered. It was found that a fully cer...
