چکیده مقاله:

Background and Objectives: Bariatric surgery is one of the most effective treatments for obesity. This study was designed to investigate changes in the serum iron, TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity) and transferrin levels in patients with morbid obesity undergoing bariatric surgery in Kerman in 2018. Materials and Methods: This prospective study was carried out on 65 participants who had gone under bariatric surgeries. Demographic data were collected by a questionnaire. Serum iron, transferrin and TIBC levels were measured one day before and one and six months after surgery. Data were analyzed using repeated measurements ANOVA and paired t-test. Result: The changes in the mean of the serum iron level and serum transferrin level during the three times were decreasing and statistically significant (p<0.001 and p=0.002, respectively). Conclusion: Iron deficiency is one of the most common complications after bariatric surgery. This finding replicates the importance of preventive treatment in these patients. Key words: Serum iron level, TIBC, Transferrin, Bariatric surgery, Morbid obesity   Funding: This study did not have any funds. Conflict of interest: None declared. Ethical approval: The Ethics Committee of Rafsanjan University of Medical Sciences approved the study (IR.KMU.REC.1398.88).     How to cite this article: Taghipur Gh, Lashkarizadeh M, Saeed Askari P, Ahmadinia H, Kuhestani Parizi M. Modification of fully automated total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) assay in serum and comparison with dimension TIBC method.

BACKGROUND We previously reported the development of a fully automated assay for total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) in serum, using a multipurpose automated analyzer. However, this method requires four different reagents and is thus useful only with a limited number of available analyzers. We simplified our original assay and compared the analytical performance of the modified method with that ...

Total iron-binding capacity calculated from serum transferrin concentration or serum iron concentration and unsaturated iron-binding capacity.

in borderline cases. The routine use of other biomar-ker assays, such as HFABP in conjunction with tGST activity, could provide complementary information on the potential allograft " viability ". This is illustrated by the fact that there was better segregation of donor categories (controlled vs uncontrolled) with HFABP than with tGST activity. This finding therefore warrants continued evaluati...

Serum iron and total iron-binding capacity compared with serum ferritin in assessment of iron deficiency.

Ferritin values for 250 selected sera were compared with values for iron, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), and transferrin saturation, to assess the potential of the ferritin assay for the detection of latent iron deficiency. The specimens were grouped (50 in each group) according to their values for iron and TIBC. In Group 1 (low iron, high TIBC) the saturation and ferritin values both indi...

Effects of Alpha-Lipoid Acid on Serum Iron, Total Iron Binding Capacity and Hematological Indices in β-Thalassemia Major Patients: A Cross Over Clinical Trial

Background and Objectives: Accumulation of iron is the most common consequences of repeated blood transfusions in β-thalassemia major patients. Iron chelating effects of alpha-lipoic acid have been reported by several studies. The aim of this study was to investigate effects of supplementation with alpha-lipoic acid, as a chelator, on serum iron and hematological indices in these patients.  Ma...
