در این مقاله، تاریخ گسترش آموزش ریاضی را از وضعیت آغازی آن که یکی از حوزه های کاری ریاضیدانان به شمار می رفت تا تولد آن به عنوان یک حوزۀ علمی و پژوهشی مستقل مرور می کنیم. در این مقاله نقش ارتباطات ریاضی از طریق رشد مجلات و کنفرانس های پژوهشی مورد تحلیل قرار می گیرد. اصلاحات برنامه های درسی و روشی که باعث تغییرات در ریاضیات مدرسه ای در قرن بیستم شد نیز در نظر گرفته شده است.
