Since exposure to irradiation in radiotherapy or unwanted radiation, induces side effects to health, it is important to makear effort to protect humans against side effects induced by irradiation. In these cases, radioprotective drugs could be used to reduce or delay the side effects and the mortality induced by irradiation. Although, thiol compounds were early compounds in these categories, ...

The administration of radioprotective compounds is one approach to preventing radiation damage in non-cancerous tissues. Therefore, radioprotective compounds are crucial in clinical radiotherapy. Selenium is a radioprotective compound that has been used in previous clinical studies of radiotherapy. However, evidence regarding the effectiveness of selenium in radiotherapy and the mechanisms unde...

The radioprotective agent WR-2721 was examined for its effects on modifying the cytotoxicity of HN2 against normal and tumor cells in the AKR mouse. Quantitation was carried out by the spleen colony assay for both normal hematopoietic stem cells and AKR leukemia cells. Protection from drug toxicity and normal cell cytotoxicity was noted. Potentiation of cytotoxicity to AKR leukemia was found.

Background: Although numerous natural or synthetic drugs have been tested for their radioprotective capacity, yet no suitable drug has been introduced for routine clinical use. In this study the radioprotective effect of "a new herbal immunomodulator" commercially known as IMOD, specifically made to decrease the side effects of HIV virus, was investigated on mouse bone marrow cells. M...

Background: The increasing use of nuclear radiation for human welfare necessitates the search for new, safe, cost effective radio protectors not only for the personnel’s charged with the responsibility of working or testing with radiations in laboratories, but also for general public. With this view the present study has been undertaken to determine the deleterious effects of sub lethal g...

Based on previous data on the histamine radioprotective effect on highly radiosensitive tissues, in the present work we aimed at investigating the radioprotective potential of the H4R ligand, JNJ7777120, on ionizing radiation-induced injury and genotoxic damage in small intestine, salivary glands and hematopoietic tissue. For that purpose, rats were divided into 4 groups. JNJ7777120 and JNJ7777...

BACKGROUND Radiotherapy of head and neck tumors often leads to acute reactions of the adjacent normal tissues resulting e.g. in mucositis and xerostomia. Therefore, radioprotective drugs have been developed to reduce these effects. Studies on a tumor model using amifostine and sodium selenite adjuvant to fractionated irradiation should show whether the radioprotective effect on normal tissue le...
