The cydAB genes from Mycobacterium smegmatis have been cloned and characterized. The cydA and cydB genes encode the two subunits of a cytochrome bd oxidase belonging to the widely distributed family of quinol oxidases found in prokaryotes. The cydD and cydC genes located immediately downstream of cydB encode a putative ATP-binding cassette-type transporter. At room temperature, reduced minus ox...

Inhalation of ozone (O₃), a common environmental pollutant, causes pulmonary injury, pulmonary inflammation, and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) in healthy individuals and exacerbates many of these same sequelae in individuals with preexisting lung disease. However, the mechanisms underlying these phenomena are poorly understood. Consequently, we sought to determine the contribution of osteopo...

During recent years an increasing focus has been directed towards the adverse health effects associated with ambient air pollution. Elderly people appear to be particularly susceptible to the adverse effects involving the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, resulting in symptoms, exacerbations of disease and even mortality. From an epidemiological point of view it is essential to obtain a m...

Decompression sickness (DCS), which is caused by inert gas bubbles in tissues, is an injury of concern for scuba divers, compressed air workers, astronauts, and aviators. Case reports for 3322 air and N2-O2 dives, resulting in 190 DCS events, were retrospectively analyzed and the outcomes were scored as (1) serious neurological, (2) cardiopulmonary, (3) mild neurological, (4) pain, (5) lymphati...

Fluctuations in soil moisture create drying-rewetting events affecting the activity of microorganisms. Microbial responses to drying-rewetting are mostly studied in soils that are air-dried before rewetting. Upon rewetting, two patterns of bacterial growth have been observed. In the Type 1 pattern, bacterial growth rates increase immediately in a linear fashion. In the Type 2 pattern, bacterial...

Background: Ventilation plays a crucial role in reducing the number of air transmitted pathogens in isolated rooms. Determination of the suitable type of ventilation system and the proper ventilating rate has always been a challenge. Patients’ bed arrangement and the location of the staff are also expected to influence the occupational exposure of the staffs’ to harmful airborne particles. The...

We investigated grating-coupled transmission-type surface plasmon resonance (SPR) for sensing applications. In the transmission-type SPR structure, propagating surface plasmons are outcoupled to radiation modes by dielectric and metallic gratings on a metal film. The results calculated in air and water suggest that the proposed structures present extremely linear sensing characteristics. In ter...

We have shown that injury to alveolar epithelial type I cells may account, in part, for damage to the air-blood barrier of the lung in a rat model of Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia. We have also shown that alpha-toxin is an important cause of damage to the air-blood barrier; however, our data suggest that the toxin is not acting directly on alveolar type I cells.

We present two cases of traumatic pneumorrhachis that is defined as air within the spinal canal. It is also known as pneumosaccus, intraspinal pneumocele, aerorachia, pneumomyelogram, or simply intraspinal air. Only few cases have been reported in the literature, and a review of the literature has exposed only 35 cases in epidural type and 18 cases in subarachnoid type. (J Kor Neurotraumatol So...
