The epidemiological characteristics of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I infection in Taiwan have been explored by an island-wide community-based survey, which was carried out among residents in 19 townships and metropolitan precincts randomly selected through stratified sampling. Serum specimens of 7278 healthy subjects were screened by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and confirmed by W...

Substantial evidence indicates that several common viruses are clearly or probable causal factors in the etiology of specific malignancies. These viruses either normally establish latency or can become persistent infections. Oncogenesis is probably linked to an enhanced level of viral activation in the infected host, reflecting heavy viral dose or compromised immune control. The major virus-mal...

Simian T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (STLV-1) strains occasionally infect humans. However, the frequency of such infections is unknown. We show that direct transmission of STLV-1 from nonhuman primates to humans may be responsible for a substantial proportion of human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 infections in rural Côte d'Ivoire, where primate hunting is common.

Reported at the beginning of the 1980s, Human T lymphotropic viruses type 1 and 2 (HTLV1, HTLV 2) were the first retroviruses to have been detected in human beings. HTLV 1 was isolated from adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) and first described by Takatsuki et al. in Japan in 1976, as a malignancy that only affects T cells and only in adults (1, 2). Albeit infrequent, HTLV-1 infection may lead to seve...

Background and Aims: Human lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1) causes various diseases such as adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) and HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraperesis (HAM / TSP) in humans. The main goal of this study is to compare Iranian protease subtypes structure of this virus (HTLV-1) to samples collected from other part of world in order to understand their diff...

Objective(s): Coronary artery disease (CAD) is known as a life threatening disease, worldwide. In this study the role of HTLV-1 infection was evaluated on cardiac involvement in an endemic region of northeastern Iran.Materials and Methods: Serologic and molecular tests for HTLV-1 infection were carried out in subjects who had coronary an...
