BACKGROUND/AIMS Chondroitin sulfates are glycosaminoglycans bound to core proteins of proteoglycans in the extracellular matrix and perineuronal nets surrounding many types of neurones. Chondroitin 4- and chondroitin 6- sulfate can bind calcium ions with different affinities, depending on their sulfation position. Extracellular calcium plays a key role in determining the transmembrane potential...

Magnesium sulfate is widely used in obstetrics and is drug of choice in two important complications of pregnancy, preeclampsia and preterm labor. The antagonistic effects of magnesium sulfate on calcium ion and on platelet aggregation may lead to changes in bleeding time. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of magnesium sulfate on bleeding time in women with threatened preterm labor...

Disturbance in water relations is the major causes of vase life reduction and senescence in cut flowers This problem is mainly due to microorganism proliferation in the vase solution which leads to vascular occlusion and reduction in solution uptake by cut flowers. Therefore a comprehensive study was conducted to evaluate the biocidal effect of nano silver particles (NSP) and compare it with so...

Following elective revision of lumbar decompression and non-instrumented fusion, a 69 year old woman developed confusion, convulsions and coma associated with greatly elevated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) calcium levels. It is presumed that the elevated calcium was secondary to the use of OsteoSet, a calcium sulfate pellet preparation used to augment autologous bone graft growth.

Calcium is the only known component in the diet that may affect absorption of both nonheme and heme iron. However, the evidence for a calcium effect on iron absorption mainly comes from studies that did not isolate the effect of calcium from that of other dietary components, because it was detected in single-meal studies. Our objective was to establish potential effects of calcium on absorption...

Cattle drinking water is a source of on-farm Escherichia coli O157:H7 transmission. The antimicrobial activities of disinfectants to control E. coli O157:H7 in on-farm drinking water are frequently neutralized by the presence of rumen content and manure that generally contaminate the drinking water. Different chemical treatments, including lactic acid, acidic calcium sulfate, chlorine, chlorine...

Release of different heavy metals from various industries is a significant environmental hazard worldwide. In order to reduce the threat these chemicals, treatment methods are needed make them harmless. This study approaches problem by examining effect gypsum content for immobilization selenium oxyanions selenite and selenate, sulfate, with calcium sulfoaluminate belite (CSAB) cement-based ettr...
