The effectiveness of 13 N-acetylneuraminic acid derivatives as potential inducers of Arthrobacter sialophilus neuraminidase were examined. N-Acetylneuraminic acid nitrogen and thioglycosides were not inducers, whereas 2,3-dehydro-N-acetylneuraminic acid, a transition state analog for neuraminidases, was the most effective inductive ligand. The C-4 hydroxyl function of N-acetylneuraminic acid wa...

The whole viable Mycoplasma gallisepticum (strain TT) organisms were found to possess neuraminidase activity with a pH optimum of 5.8 on substrates such as human transferrin, human alpha(1)-glycoprotein, and rabbit serum. The enzyme operated optimally at pH 4.5 when N-acetylneuraminyl-lactose was used as the test substrate.

It is only for the myxoviruses that the chemistry of the cellular receptors has been elucidated, at least to some extent. From studies with soluble glycopro teins which can inhibit hemagglutination, it has been shown that the receptor site is ./V-acetylneuraminic acid (NANA), which is located on the terminal position of the oligosaccharide side chains. The soluble inhibitory glycoproteins and ...

Background and purpose: Influenza is one of the viral infections of the respiratory system, which causes death in high-risk groups every year. The genomic changes of influenza virus make it susceptible to drug resistance, therefore, continuous monitoring of the influenza virus is highly important in order to recognize the efficacy of available drugs. The current study investigated the neuramin...

A cell-free assay has been developed for the delivery of influenza virus neuraminidase to the plasma membrane. Two types of postnuclear supernatant, which acted as donor and acceptor of the enzyme, were prepared from baby hamster kidney cells. Donor preparations were obtained from cells infected with influenza virus and containing neuraminidase en route to the plasma membrane. Acceptor preparat...

Influenza virus is a pathogen that causes morbidity and mortality worldwide. Whereas vaccination is important for prevention of disease, given its limitations, antiviral therapy is at the forefront of treatment and also plays a role in prevention. Currently, two classes of antiviral medications, the adamantanes and the neuraminidase inhibitors, are approved for treatment. Given the resistance p...

The x-ray structure of a complex of sialic acid (Neu5Ac) with neuraminidase N9 subtype from A/tern/Australia/G70C/75 influenza virus at 4 degrees C has revealed the location of a second Neu5Ac binding site on the surface of the enzyme. At 18 degrees C, only the enzyme active site contains bound Neu5Ac. Neu5Ac binds in the second site in the chair conformation in a similar way to which it binds ...
