amoebiasis is one of the most important human diseases in many countries especially in tropical and sub-tropical regions. this study was carried out from august 1999 to february 2002 in order to determine the ratio of entamoeba histolytica / entamoeba dispar in some regions of iran. a total of 16,592 stool samples were randomly collected from different agegroups in central, northern and souther...

the genus entamoeba contains many species, six of which (entamoeba histolytica, entamoeba dispar, entamoeba moshkovskii, entamoeba polecki, entamoeba coli, and entamoeba hartmanni) reside in the human intestinal lumen. entamoeba histolytica is the causative agent of amebiasis in humans with a worldwide distribution. correct detection of e.histolytica is frequently a major concern in diagnostic ...

background: entamoeba moshkovskii and e. dispar are impossible to differentiate microscopically from the pathogenic species e. histolytica . multiplex polymerase chain reaction (multiplex pcr) is a widespread molecular biology technique for amplification of multiple targets in a single pcr experiment. methods: for detection and differentiation of the three-microscopy indistinguishable entamoeba...

To address the molecular diversity and occurrence of pathogenic species of the genus Entamoeba spp. in wild non-human primates (NHP) we conducted molecular-phylogenetic analyses on Entamoeba from wild chimpanzees living in the Issa Valley, Tanzania. We compared the sensitivity of molecular [using a genus-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR)] and coproscopic detection (merthiolate-iodine-for...

We report the first intestinal infections in Tunisia with Entamoeba moshkovskii in two healthy adults. Entamoeba moshkovskii cysts were distinguished from those of the morphologically identical parasites Entamoeba histolytica and Entamoeba dispar by specific nested polymerase chain reaction and sequencing.

Classically, detection of Entamoeba histolytica is performed by microscopic examination for characteristic cysts and/or trophozoites in fecal preparations. Differentiation of E. histolytica cysts and those of nonpathogenic amoebic species is made on the basis of the appearance and the size of the cysts. However, by classical means objective tools for confirmation and quality control do not exis...

To expand the representation for phylogenetic analysis, ten additional complete Entamoeba small-subunit rRNA gene sequences were obtained from humans, non-human primates, cattle and a tortoise. For some novel sequences no corresponding morphological data were available, and we suggest that these organisms should be referred to as ribosomal lineages (RL) rather than being assigned species names ...

Our current taxonomic perspective on Entamoeba is largely based on small-subunit ribosomal RNA genes (SSU rDNA) from Entamoeba species identified in vertebrate hosts with minor exceptions such as E. moshkovskii from sewage water and E. marina from marine sediment. Other Entamoeba species have also been morphologically identified and described from non-vertebrate species such as insects; however...
