abstract this study tried to investigate whether there was any significant relationship between technical translation quality of the senior english translation students and their levels of verbal-linguistic, visual-spatial and interpersonal intelligences. in order to investigate the research questions, the researcher selected a hundred senior english translation students from three universitie...
In our effort to build spoken language translation systems we have extended our JANUS system to process spontaneous human–human dialogs in a new domain, two people trying to schedule a meeting. Trained on an initial database JANUS-2 is able to translate English and German spoken input in either English, German, Spanish, Japanese or Korean output. To tackle the difficulty of spontaneous human–hu...
In this paper we report on our e orts to combine speech and language processing toward multi-lingual spontaneous speech translation. The ongoing work extends our JANUS system e ort toward handling spontaneous spoken discourse and multiple languages. A major objective of this project is to maximize the number of modules, methods and data structures that are language-independent and extensible to...
In the framework of the EU-funded Project LC-STAR, a set of Language Resources (LR) for all the Speech to Speech Translation components (Speech recognition, Machine Translation and Speech Synthesis) was developed. This paper deals with the development of bilingual corpora in Spanish, US English and Catalan. The corpora were obtained from spontaneous dialogues in one of these three languages whi...
regarding the ever evolving and improving world on different aspects of knowledge, the need to a worldwide communication would emerge stronger than ever before which calls for special attention on the judgments and best choices for intermediating between the nations. as the language skills for translation are tested separately from translation skills themselves, to assess translation skills pro...
Changes in neuronal spontaneous activities after prolonged optic flow stimulation (using the three basic flow modes: translation, radiation and rotation) were inve stigated by extracellular single-unit recording in cortical area PMLS of the cat. The results showed that the evoked responses decreased with the prolongation of visual stimuli, and the spontaneous activities usually dropped to a low...
translation studies have become an accepted academic subject and books, journals and doctoral dissertations appear faster than one can read them all (bassnet and lefevere, 1990). but this field also brought with itself so many other issues which needed to be investigated more, in the heart of which, issues like ideology, ethics, culture, bilingualism and multilingualism. it is reported that ove...
We present the machine translation system used by LF from INESC-ID in the evaluation campaign of the International Workshop on Spoken Language Translation (2007), in the task of translating spontaneous conversations in the travel domain from Italian to English.

JANUS-II is a research system to design and test components of speech-to-speech translation systems as well as a research prototype for such a system. We will focus on two aspects of the system: 1) new features of the speech recognition component JANUS-SR, 2) the end-to-end performance of JANUS-II, including a comparison of two machine translation strategies used for JANUS-MT (PHOENIX and GLR*).
