abstract the present study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of a rather newly developed method in language teaching that is the use of paragraph reading task and whole reading task and their effects on improving efl learner’s speaking ability. to fulfill the purpose of the study, first 90 participants studying their course at sa eedi high school in tehran were chosen by means of administering a standard pet test. then after homogenization, 60 learners were randomly assigned to two experimental groups of 30participants each.the intervention for the two experimental groups was using paragraph reading task and whole reading task for improving the speaking skill. after 15 sessions of instruction, the subjects took part in a speaking posttest. the analysis of the data was done through t-test. it revealed that there was no significant difference in the effectiveness of using paragraph reading task over whole reading task on speaking ability of efl learners. the scores of participants in the speaking posttest demonstrated that both groups outperformed their previous speaking ability results though the difference between them was not significant.
